毕业季真的来啦！

今天我们来说一说毕业那些事儿。

先简单说“毕业”（graduate）这个词。

*Vi. 毕业

He graduated from Medicine Department，class of 1998.
他毕业于医学系，1998届。

哪一届是用“class of”来表达的。

这里的“class”不是班级那么小的范围，是指一整届的学生。

He graduated as an M.D. at Edinburgh.
他毕业于爱丁堡大学，获医学博士学位(Doctor of Medicine)。

*Vt. 使毕业

The university graduated 500 students last year.
该大学去年毕业了500名学生。

*N. 毕业生

He is a graduate in medicine.
他是医科毕业生。

学位服
Cap and Gown

穿上学位服除了用put on，还可用don[d?n]这个书面词：don your cap and gown。

英式英语里，don还可指大学或学院的教员，尤指牛津或剑桥大学教员。

其实学位服还有个部分叫hood（兜帽，坎肩），就是披在背后的那个垂布。

关于gown，很多学校都有自己的特色，大体就是我们常见的那个大袍子。

咱们要专门讲的，是每年都有媒体专门报道的学位帽caps。

学位帽最常用的叫法是cap，又叫square academic cap，graduate cap。

不过，“学位帽”还有个有趣的说法：

“托泥板”，Mortarboard。

Mortarboard=mortar（砂浆）+board（板子）。

这个词本意是泥瓦匠砌墙时用来hold mortar（托砂浆）的“托泥板”，后引申出“学位帽”的意思。

* academic tam 学位便帽

扁平四方的cap最为常见，但也还有其它种类繁多的学位帽。

例如，单是tam便帽，就有四角、六角、八角的区分。

*Tudor bonnet 都铎软帽

又叫doctor's bonnet，源于英国都铎王朝时期，一般是博士戴的。

很多欧美毕业生都会装饰自己的caps，让自己stand out。

除了“Thanks mom and dad”“Genius grad”这些常规字样，毕业生们争相营造着bedazzling（让你眼花缭乱的）caps，堪称毕业一景。

毕业典礼
Commencement/Graduation Ceremony

英美许多大学采取“严出”的毕业标准，所以能通过考核、参加毕业典礼，是件值得高兴的事。家长一般都会出席这个最后的家长会，共同庆祝。

英式英语里，毕业典礼一般叫“graduation ceremony”，毕业那天则是“graduation day”。

而在美国，毕业典礼则通常被称作“commencement ceremony”，毕业那天除了叫graduation day，也可以叫“commencement day”。

本义为“开始”：

at the commencement of the twentieth century
20世纪伊始

动词形式“commence”：

Education commences at the mother's knee.
教育始于母亲膝下。

看到这，机智如你应该发现了：用“commencement”来表达毕业典礼，是有深意的：

Graduation is not only an end to a period, but also a commencement of a new period.
毕业不仅是过去的结束，也是新阶段的开始。

毕业演讲

世界名校大多会邀请各界精英来deliver（发表）演讲，这些演讲逻辑清晰、富含哲理，是学习必备的优质鸡汤哦。

典礼上演讲的，还有这样一个人： valedictorian。

就是专门指上台致毕业告别辞的那个学生，通常是这一届成绩最优秀的。

“Graduated as the valedictorian”可不是谁都能放上简历的。

不过有件事，每个毕业生都能在典礼上经历：

Cap上那个穗穗就叫tassel（流苏） 。

通常是校长或系主任，会为每个degree candidate（学位候选人）turn the tassel（拨穗），象征着transition from candidate to graduate。

注意：正确的拨穗姿势，是从右边拨到左边。

所以上台接受拨穗礼之前，记得把穗穗先拨到右边。

一般拨穗完成后，毕业生们就能拿着diploma（文凭），degree congregation（学位授予）基本完成。

典礼结束，毕业生们一定会get这个姿势：

毕业宴/派对
Graduation Dinner/Party

graduation celebration dinner 或graduation dinner（毕业宴），很多学校都会为毕业生们举办。

graduation party则是相对更放松的毕业派对。

美国不少家庭也会in honor of 毕业生而举办graduation dinner/party，向亲友发出invitations。

这些farewell dinner（饯别宴，俗称“散伙饭”）上，常有包含毕业元素、精心设计的decorations，如graduation balloons、graduation cakes等。

毕业信物
Graduation Keepsakes

纪念品除了可以用souvenir表达，还可用keepsake。

前者包括各种纪念品，比如自己去旅游买的，而后者通常指相互赠与的信物、纪念物。

A keepsake is a small present that someone gives you so that you will not forget them. 纪念品；信物。

graduation card(毕业卡片)大家比较熟悉了。

* class ring 毕业戒指

又叫graduation, graduate, senior, or grad ring，高中、大学的毕业年级一般都会设计这一届独特的class ring，例如刻字、内嵌徽章等。

“戴上毕业戒指”也可用don这个词：

don one’s class ring。

最早设计并佩戴自己独特毕业戒指的，据说是美国西点军校（the United States Military Academy at West Point.）1835届的毕业生们。

* memory book 纪念册

满满的回忆有没有！

以前流行用scrapbooking手工制作。

现在数字化的毕业季，这种scrap books（剪贴簿）越来越少啦。

毕业论文
Graduation Thesis/Dissertation

本来不想放这个沉重的话题，但大家毕业论文应该都写完了吧？

英式英语里，本科和硕士论文都叫dissertation， 博士论文叫thesis；

而美式完全反过来，本科和硕士论文叫thesis，博士论文叫dissertation；

Paper可以指课程论文，或某个具体研究在会议或者期刊上发表的论文。如term paper, course paper, research paper。

Essay的含义较广，既可指几千字的短篇论文，也可以指散文或者杂文。

如doctoral dissertation defense 博士学位论文答辩。
