Every sportsman should have sportsmanship. When defeated, he should greet his opponent and congratulate him. If he can’t, on one will care to be his opponent because he lacks basic decorum and the spirit of a good sportsman.

A true sportsman has a generous heart, admits to his loss and does not act with vexation. Learning to have sportsmanship is very important. It doesn’t always matter whether one wins or not. What’s even more important than results is what you have learned from each competition.

By “luxury”, we mean “a pleasant and often expensive thing that is not necessary”. From a historical point of view, things which Were a luxury when they first came into being all became necessities later. When the electric bulb was first invented in the U.S., it was such a luxury that only government bodies could afford to use it. Nowadays, however, it has reached every part of the world. It is the same case with telephone, TV, and a lot of others, which were all luxuries years ago.

Anything, no matter how luxurious it is, will become a necessity when it is widely used. This is true of many of the present luxuries, including mobile phones, cars, computers and many other things. It is known to all that the purpose of the development of science is to make things easy for the mankind, not for only a small number of people. Therefore, the first thing to do after a new invention occurs is to spread it so as to benefit as many people as possible. In the course of the spread, the luxury becomes decreasingly luxurious until in the end it becomes a necessity. This is an objective law, nothing can be an exception.

With the quick development of science and technology, the process for many things to become a necessity from a luxury will be greatly shortened. Anything that can be imagined will be invented and in no time becomes a necessity accessible to ordinary people.

It’s so late, almost 11:00 at night. Have you entered into the sweet dream yet? I haven’t seen you for a long time. I miss you so much. Can you hear my sincere words? Maybe you’ll never know I miss you so much!

Do you still remember the happy days when we were all together? During those days we were full of sunshine. You and mum often took brother and me to the park. We always saw the ice-cream tear. Sometimes, you stayed at home and cooked some delicious food for us. We often waited for you and played with you. You could lift me very high. We always had a good time. You also concerned about my lesson. But you have never chastised me and lectured me. You were full of thoughts for me. What’s more, you were my best father in my heart. You were the envy of my friends. I was happy for a long time. But now, all things have changed. You can’t take care of me. You aren’t at home all day. Sometimes, I go to bed late, but I still can’t see you. Are you busy? No! you often play cards with your work friends in the factory. So you can’t go back home early. I’m angry to hear that! Do you know? If you don’t come back, we’ll worry about you. I often see you and mum should divorce in my dream. I’m very scared, because I want to have a happy family. I can’t control my tears and often suffer from insomnia the whole night.

Dad, I want to see you and talk with you. But I have no courage to tell you. But I hope you can care our family. Dad! Could you hear my voice?

Hope you keep healthy and best wishes.

Food between China and Western countries are totally different styles. China has 5000 years history. We probably spend half of time on food. Chinese people choice food very carefully. They only use fresh material to make food. For example they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas and techniques for cooking. We can cook a chicken in over ten ways. That’s why Chinese food is so popular in the world. Western country like English or American, they don’t have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarket which only sells stored materials. Western people would also prefer fast food like burgers and chips. They are unhealthy to human body. Western people do not have many skills for cooking, mostly they only boil, steam and bake the food. By the way, western people are very good at making desert and chocolate. They can make very good cake and chocolate. They are very sweet but it’s sort of food which make you become fat quickly.

In china if you invite people for meal, the person who invited other people would pay for the meal but it’s not the way in Western country. In western country people will think you only invited me but it’s not your responsibility to pay for me. I can afford it. They won’t be happy if you pay for them. People in China would always put dishes into customer’s plate to show their hospitality, but they will think it’s not healthy because your chopsticks have been used by you. In western country like America not England, people will always give tips to waiter after they finished meal in a restaurant. If you don’t they will not be happy because tips are one of their major income. In china this only happen in some top restaurants and hotels in large international cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Western people will also think you are rude if you make sound during the meal. Western people do not hold their bowl up even when they have a bowl of soup.

There is also a huge difference between Chinese and Western people. Chinese people use chopsticks and western people use fork and knife. Usually people who use fork and knife will use fork to hold the meat and cut it by knife and use fork to help to get that piece of meat into mouse. Chinese just use chopstick to pick things and pass it into your mouse.

Chinese people only have three meals during a day. But western people will have more, they have afternoon tea. Usually they would have fruits, homemade cake, tea (black tea) or biscuit with cheese. If you are a housewife and have a lot of time, you may have morning tea as well.

There are many different ways to get information. On the one hand, the traditional ways such as newspapers , magazines , books ,and so on play a very important role in obtaining the information for many people. On the other hand, with the development of science and technology, internet and multi-media become more and more popular for people to get information.

As far as I am concerned, I like to get information through reading newspapers. There are three reasons for this. First, there are many interesting things on the newspaper besides what I am looking for. Second, I like to read the printed words which will always give me a deeper understanding of the language. As was said by Francis Bacon , reading makes a full man. Third, it provides me with a chance to clip down all the articles and useful things so as to be kept for later use.

In conclusion, different people prefer different ways to get what they want . However, it is necessary to keep in mind that no definite way is suitable for all circumstances . Modern life would be unimaginable without telecommunications. Telephone, fax and TV are already household words. New terms like pager, mobile phone and E-mail are entering our daily life at a rapid pace. Telecommunications have penetrated nearly every aspect of modern life and are fast changing the way we live.

It is no exaggeration to say that telecommunication bring huge profits and great convenience on our daily life. For instance, the telephone makes it possible for people in different places to talk to one another. Pager and mobile phone enable us to make a phone call regardless of time and place. Compared with ordinary mail delivery, or even with express airmail delivery, electronic mail delivers mails much faster and at a surprisingly cheap price, no matter where the receiver is. Surfing the Internet is also a by-product of telecommunication, which, provides us with easy access to a wealth of information. Furthermore, thanks to the rapid growth of telecommunications, business corporations can manage business affairs far more efficiently through phone, fax, and on-line computer.

However, there are disadvantages brought about by telecommunication, such as phone bills for unnecessary talks, the disturbance of unwanted or wrong calls, and the attraction of hot-line services, etc. Yet by and large, telecommunications bring more benefit than harm to our life.

The green shoots of a recovery in Japan’s manufacturing sector are appearing just as a protracted period of deflation menaces the nation’s overall economy.

After three years of mild price increases, Japan is about to enter another stretch of deflation — when constantly weakening prices discourage consumers from spending and companies from investing. In recent months, prices have been pulled down by falling oil and commodities prices as well as eroding consumer demand as Japan grapples with recession.

The encouraging news about manufacturing was accompanied by a grim diagnosis for the overall economy. The Bank of Japan lowered its forecast for the core consumer-price index, which excludes volatile fresh food but includes energy prices, to a decline of 1.5% for the current fiscal year ending in March, compared with an increase of 1.2% for the past fiscal year. For the fiscal year ending in March 2011, the central bank predicts the index will fall 1%.

Until recently, consumer prices have held up surprisingly well, thanks to the effect of previous increases in energy and commodities prices. But now that such a boost is disappearing, the core consumer-price index in March, to be announced Friday, is likely to have contracted 0.2% from a year earlier, marking the first decline since September 2007, according to forecasts from economists.

Amid the world-wide slowdown, inflation pressure has subsided rapidly — giving rise to deflation concerns — as commodities prices decline and wages shrink. The International Monetary Fund sees headline inflation in advanced economies falling by an average 0.2% this year, before rising by 0.3% in 2010.

’Japan starts with significantly greater deflation risks than the United States or the euro area,’ the IMF said in a recent report. ‘Economic activity is very weak, and, apart from the energy-related spike in 2008, the inflation rate has not been much above zero for many years.’

Deflation is taking hold in Japan even as recent data indicate the worst may be over for the country’s all-important manufacturing sector, where a slump in exports has led to stark cuts in production. The government said Thursday that industrial production expanded 1.6% from a month earlier in March, in its first increase in six months. Output remains far lower than year-earlier levels but the data suggest manufacturers are beginning to ease up on production cuts as inventories that had piled up have slimmed down considerably.

The BOJ said the economy will likely contract 3.1% during the current fiscal year, before expanding 1.2% in the following year. The central bank kept its monetary policy steady, with its key rate near zero at 0.1%.

A senior BOJ official said fear among economists of not knowing the length and depth of the recession has been replaced by a ‘sliver of hope,’ thanks to improvements in export and production data. He added that the sustainability of the recovery remains ‘a very big question.’

Many nations, including the U.S. and China, now face weaker consumer prices. But Japan, which was dogged by deflation from 1999 to 2005, faces a particular risk of persistent deflation as its aging and contracting population makes consumer demand in the nation inherently weak, with or without a recession, economists say.

’Continued weakening in prices could bring about spiraling declines in corporate profits, employment, and workers’ income,’ said Satoru Ogasawara, a Credit Suisse economist in Tokyo. ‘That would push down final demand further.’

In Japan, government data are just beginning to reflect price declines throughout the country. To woo thrifty consumers, companies are relying on lessons learned during the last round of deflation, and in recent months have cut prices on items such as bread, blue jeans and sofas.

Faced with chronic declines in sales, top supermarket chains have resorted to an all-out price war, which, according to analysts, is cutting further into their earnings. Retailer Seiyu Ltd. started a campaign to match competitors’ prices if customers brought in ads showing lower prices, borrowing a strategy of its parent company, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

American eating is funny. They eat almost everything with a fork, and it appears that holding a knife in one’s right hand longer than a few seconds is considered to be against good table manners.

The system is that if it is absolutely necessary to use a knife, people take the fork in their left hand, and cut off a piece of meat or whatever it is in the normal manner. Then they put the knife down, transfer the fork to their right hand, and only then do they transport the food to their mouth. This is clearly ludicrous(滑稽可笑),but it is considered good manners.

There are several results of this system.First,if it is not absolutely necessary to use a knife,Americans don’t use one, because obviously this greatly complicates(使复杂化)things, and you will therefore see them trying to cut things like potatoes, fish and even bacon(熏猪肉)with a fork.Second, towards the end of a course, since only one implement(器具)is being used, food has to bo chased around the plate with the fork —and for the last mouthful the thumb has to be used to keep the food in place, although one is not supposed to do this.

Third, tables are generally laid with one knife and two forks, the outside fork being for the salad. There is no need for foreign visitors to follow the American system and try to eat the salad with only a fork, but if you do use your knife, remerber to save it for the meat course.Even desserts(甜食)(except ice cream)are eaten with a fork if at all possible, and the spoon you see by your dessert is meant to be for coffee (but if you use it for your dessert no one will say anything).

Some Breakfast Dishes 早餐食谱Breakfast in a restaurant is a very enjoyable experience. If you order eggs in a restaurant, the waiter/waitress will ask you how you want them .You can reply that you want them “scrambled(炒)”or “boiled”.It is not sufficient, however,to ask for them “fried”you will have to specify whether you would prefer them “sunny-side-up”(煎一面),”over”(两面煎),”over-easy/easy-over”(两面煎,但蛋黄仍然呈流体状).

American sausage(香肠)comes in slices and is quite spicy. But you can also have link sausage.

American bacon comes in small strips, can be rather fat,and is served crispy. It is usually very tasty, and you can eat it with your fingers.

  ”Hash brows”(油炸土豆片)are shredded(切成碎片的)and fried potatoes.They are wonderful,especially with fried eggs and ketchup(蕃茄酱).

”Pancakes”,sometimes called “hot cakes”,are made with baking power. They are normally served in a pile, and you are supposed to put butter and syrup(果浆)on them.

”Jelly”(果子冻)is jam and includes grape jelly, which is very tasty.

Toast is often served already buttered.

”English muffins(松饼)”are like small crumpets(烤饼)without the holes and are served toasted. You put jam on them.

  A “biscuit”(软饼)is a snall,scone-like bread roll,often served hot.

Orange juice and coffer are often serced with breakfast.

Chrysler LLC on Thursday filed for bankruptcy reorganization at the behest of the U.S. government after failing to reach an agreement with a small group of creditors.

’This process will be quick, it will be efficient,’ U.S. President Barack Obama said in a televised address.

The Obama administration, which led the Chrysler reorganization talks because it has provided loans to keep the car maker operating, expects a relatively speedy bankruptcy proceeding that could be wrapped up in as little as 30 to 60 days.

The government, which already has provided more than $4 billion to Chrysler, said Thursday it would commit to a further $8 billion to help the company through bankruptcy.

At the same time, Mr. Obama announced that Italian car maker Fiat SpA had agreed to enter into an alliance with Chrysler. Under it, Fiat will provide the U.S. company with technology for small, fuel-efficient models.

For Chrysler, the bankruptcy filing and Fiat pact represent a chance to end years of losses and declining market share. The car maker suffered from high labor and production costs and union agreements that required it to provide extensive health care and other benefits to 115,000 retirees.

Chrysler’s plight intensified last year when high gasoline prices dissuaded customers from buying its sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks, the company’s main source of profits. Meantime, the company had de-emphasized small cars in recent years and it had a sparse selection at a time when consumers were seeking them.

A New York bankruptcy court is expected to handle the restructuring, which could be easier to push through because, unlike the out-of-court talks, it doesn’t need approval of all creditors. A simple majority will suffice, and large creditors, including U.S. banks J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc., are already believed to support the plan.

In his noon address, President Obama took a tough stance against what he described as the small group of ‘speculators,’ the debt holders that had held up the Chrysler restructuring. The bankruptcy proceedings are ‘designed to deal with those last few holdouts,’ Obama said.

The holdouts, including hedge funds and pension funds, may choose to fight the court proceedings, which could derail the government’s timetable. In a statement released Wednesday before the president’s address, they questioned the administration’s willingness to negotiate, saying their own offer was ‘flatly rejected or ignored.’

If the court plan is approved, Chrysler’s car-making operations will be sold to a new company, which would emerge from bankruptcy under entirely new ownership and without the onerous obligations to creditors and employees.

Chrysler’s existing owners, private-equity fund Cerberus Capital Management LP and Germany’s Daimler AG, would lose all their holdings, and a health-care trust fund for retirees will emerge as the new majority owner, with a 55% stake.

Under its partnership, Fiat initially will receive a 20% stake in Chrysler but it could rise to 35% if certain targets are met. Fiat has the option of becoming a majority shareholder once the U.S. loans have been repaid.

The U.S. Treasury Department, meanwhile, will own 8% of Chrysler, and the governments of Canada and Ontario, which will provide $2.4 billion in financing, will hold a combined 2% stake.

The car maker’s 54,000 employees and its 115,000 retirees, represented by the United Auto Workers union, late Wednesday approved their part of the bargain, eliminating a number of benefits.

Shortly after the president’s speech, Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli said he would resign, returning to work for Cerberus, which had appointed him to run the company in August 2007.

Chrysler said it will temporarily idle most of its manufacturing plants for as long as 60 days starting Monday as the company seeks to reorganize.

As part of the agreement, Chrysler’s lending arm, Chrysler Financial, will be folded into GMAC LLC, which will become the main financing source for all Chrysler vehicles. A group of investors led by Cerberus holds a majority stake in GMAC.

The U.S. government will have the power to appoint board members at the reorganized Chrysler but won’t get involved in day-to-day operations, an administration official said.

The groundwork for the revamping includes a cost-cutting deal ratified by the United Auto Workers union late Wednesday. Another Treasury-brokered agreement calls for Chrysler’s lenders to accept $2.25 billion in cash in exchange for wiping out about $6.9 billion of Chrysler’s debt. Though some creditors balked at that offer the administration official said Thursday that he expects those agreements to be kept largely intact by a bankruptcy judge.

The new government loans include between $3 billion to $3.5 billion in so-called debtor-in-possession financing and an additional $4.5 billion once the company emerges from court, administration officials said Thursday.

Club life started with coffee drinking which began around 1650.Limited to fifty, list of membership of this club includes prominent members of the Commons and the Lords and other distinguished people. However, one of the famous clubs is a non-political club and was given the name the Other Club because its aims always to hear the other man’s point of view.

  1.Education in Britain and The

In Britain all children have to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16. In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to between the ages of 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in.

  Subject

In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum(课程), which was introduced in 1988 and sets out(制定) in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7, 11, 14 and 16, when they are tested. The National Curriculum does not apply in Scotland, where each school decides what subjects it will teach.

In the US the subjects taught are decided by national and local governments. Whereas British schools usually have prayers(祈祷) and religious(宗教的) instruction, American schools are not allowed to include prayers or to teach particular religious beliefs(信仰).

  Examinations

At 16 students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations. These examinations are taken by students of all levels of ability in any of a range of subjects and may involve a final examination, an assessment(评价) of work done during the two year course, or both of these things. At 18 some students taken A-level examinations, usually in not more than 3 subjects. It is necessary to have A-levels in order to go to a university or polytechnic(综合技术大学).

In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called HIGHERS, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate(证书) of Sixth Year Studies. In Scotland the university system is different to that in England and Wales. Courses usually last four years rather than three and students study a larger number of subjects as part of their degree.

In the US school examinations are not as important as they are in Britain. Students in High Schools do have exams at the end of their last two years, but these final exams are considered along with the work that the students have done during the school years.

  Social Events and Ceremonies(仪式)

In American high schools there is a formal ceremony for Graduation (=completion of high school). Students wear a special cap and gown and receive a diploma(文凭) from the head of the school. Students often buy a class ring to ear, and a yearbook, containing pictures of their friends and teachers. There are also special social events at American schools. Sports events are popular, and cheer leaders lead the school in supporting the school team and singing the school song. At the end of their junior year, at age 17 or 18, students held in the evening. The girls wear long evening dresses and the boys wear TUXEDOS.

In Britain, there are no formal dances or social occasions(场合) associated(和…有关) with school life. Some schools have SPEECH DAY at the end of the school year when prizes are given to the best students and speeches are made by the head teacher and sometimes an invited guest. However, in many British schools students and teachers organize(组织) informal dances for the older students.

2.Government in Britain and the US

  Government in Britain

  National government

The center of government in Britain is PARLIAMENT(国会), which makes all the important laws for the country about crimes and punishment, taxation(犯罪), etc. Parliament is made up of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the monarch(贵族). The Houses of Parliament are in Westminster in London and sometimes “Westminster” itself is used to mean Parliament.

The House of commons (or the Commons) is the lower but more powerful of the two Houses. It has 650 elected members, called Members of Parliament or MPs, each representing people in a particular area or constituency. The House of Lords (the Lords) is the higher but less powerful of the two Houses. It has over 1,000 members, none of whom is elected. These members include: people who have titles like Lord or Viscount(子爵) which have been passed down to them on the death of their father (hereditary peers(世袭贵族)); people who are given titles as a reward for their long service in public life, but whose children do not INHERIT(继承) their title (life peers); and some important leaders of the Church of England (Archbishops(大主教) and Bishops(主教)).

The government brings BILL (=suggested laws) to the House of Commons, which are discussed by MPs. The bills then go to the House of Lords to be discussed. The House of Lords can suggest changes to a bill, but does not have the power to reject it (=refuse permission for it to be passed). When bills come back to the Commons, MPs vote on them and if they are passed they are signed by the monarch and become Acts of Parliament

At present England, Scotland, Wales, and N Ireland are all governed by Parliament in Westminster. In N Ireland the political parties are different but their MPs still go to the House of Commons. In Scotland there is a lot of discussion about whether Scotland should have some separate or partly separate form of government. The same is true in Wales

  Local government

Local government is Britain, also known as Councils, can make small laws (bylaws) which only apply in their area, but these are usually about small, local matters. For instance, they may be about fines that will be made for people who park in certain streets.

Councils are paid for by local taxes and also by an amount of money given to them each year by the national government. Their main job is the organizing and providing of local services, e.g. hospitals, school, libraries, public transport, street-cleaning, etc. They are also responsible for setting the amount of local tax that people must pay and for collecting this tax.

Local councils(议会) are elected by people within each town, city, or country area. The people who are elected, known as councilors, usually represent one of the national political parties, but are often elected because of their policies on local issues(问题) rather than the national policies of their party.

  Government in the US

All levels of government in the US (federal(联邦), state, and local) are elected by the people of the country.

  Federal government

The constitution of the US specifically limits the power of the federal (=national) government mainly to defence(国防), foreign affairs, printing money, controlling trade and relations between the states, and protecting human rights. The federal government is make up of the CONGRESS(国会), the President, and the Supreme Count(最高法院).

  Congress

Congress, the central law-making body in the US, is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives is the lower but more important of the two houses of Congress. It has 435 members, called Representatives or Congressmen/Congresswomen elected by their state. The member of Representative(代表) for each state depends on the size of the population of the state, with each state having at least one Representative. The Senate is the higher but less powerful of the two houses of Congress. It has 100 members, called Senators(参议院), elected by their state. Each state has two Senators.

Congress decides whether a BILL (suggested law) becomes law. If the Senate and the House of Representative both agree to a bill, the President is asked to agree.

The President can veto(=say no to) the bill(议案), but Congress can still make it a law if 2/3 of the members of each house agree to it.

  State government

State government has the greatest influence in people’s daily lives. Each state has its own written Constitution(宪法) (set of fixed law), and among the state there are sometimes great differences in law on matters such as property, crime, health, and education. The highest elected official of each state is the Governor. Each state also has one or two elected law-making bodies (state Legislature) whose members represent the various parts of the state.

  Local government

Local government concerns laws made at the town, city or county level. These laws are usually limited to a small area and concern such thing as traffic, where and when alcoholic drinks can be sold, or keeping animals. The highest elected official of a town or city Council.

Every law at every level of government must be in agreement with(一致) the United States constitution. Any citizen who thinks he or she has not been given their rights under the law may argue their case through all the courts up to the Supreme Court (the final Court of Appeal in the US) if necessary, and any law which is found not in agreement with the constitution (unconstitutional) cannot be kept in force.

3.Newspapers in Britain and the US

  Newspapers in Britain

  National and local papers

In Britain there are 11 national daily newspapers and most people read one of them every day. There are two kinds of newspaper. One is large in size and has many detailed articles about national and international events. These newspapers are called the serious papers or the quality papers. The other kind, called the tabloids is smaller in size, have more pictures, often in colour, and shorter articles, often about less important events or about the private lives of well-know people. Although some people disapprove(反对) of the tabloids(小报), more people buy them than buy the serious newspaper. The Sun, for example, which is a tabloid, is the biggest-selling newspaper in Britain. People who disapprove of the tabloids very strongly sometimes call them the Gutter Press.

There are daily or weekly newspapers in all parts of Britain which cover local news as well as some national and international stories. Local papers give information about films, concerts, and other things that are happening in the local neighborhood, including, for example, information about local people who have been married or died recently. National papers generally give information about film, concerts and other events happening in London, In Scotland, many people read the Glasgow Herald or the Scotsman and there are Scottish Editions of the tabloids.

There also many free local newspapers which are delivered to people’s homes whether they ask for them or not. These contain a lot of advertisements(广告) and also some news.

  Politics

Most national newspapers in Britain express a political opinion and people choose the newspaper that they read according to their own political beliefs. Most of the newspapers are right-wing. These are the Daily Telegraph(serious newspaper), the Daily express, Daily Mail, Daily Star, the Sun and Today(all tabloids). Of the other serious newspapers, The Times, the oldest newspaper in Britain, did not formerly have one strong political view but it is now more right-wing. The Guardian is slightly left-wing, the Independent is centre and the Financial(金融) with political issues, but reports on business and financial news. The Daily Mirror(tabloid) is left-wing.

  Daily and Sunday newspapers

Daily newspapers are published on every day of the week except Sunday. Sunday newspapers are larger than daily newspapers, often having 2 or 3 sections. There is also other a magazine, called the colour supplement(增刊). All the Sunday newspapers are national Serious newspapers include the Observer(which is slightly left-wing), the Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph and the Independent on Sunday, the Sunday Mirror, the Sunday Express, the News of the World and the Sunday Sport which is considered to lack much serious information.

  Newspapers in The US

  National and local newspapers

There are more than 1500 daily newspapers in the US. Each one is usually sold only in one part of the country, e.g. in a city, but they cover national and international news. In larger cities there is often more than one newspaper and the different ones express different political opinions. Some newspapers are sold in nearly all parts of the US. E.g. USA today and the National edition of the New York Times. Two other newspapers, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post are know and respected all over the US but cannot be bought everywhere. Other important newspapers are: the Boston Globe, sold in New England, the Chicago Tribune, sold in the Midwest, the Christian Science Monitor and USA Today, both sold nationally, and the Washington Post on the East Coast.

There are also weekly newspapers in all parts of the US which cover local news, such as what is happening in the local neighborhood(地方). Fewer people read these than read the daily newspapers.

  Daily and Sunday newspapers

Daily newspapers are published on every day of the week except Sunday. Sunday newspapers are very big, often having several separate parts. They contain many longer articles and a lot of advertisements. Each section deals with a different subject. E.g. national and international news, sport, travel, etc. One section, the classifieds(分类广告) has advertisements for jobs and things for sale. Another section is called the funnies. There is often also a magazine which is in color.

  Alternative newspapers

In the 1960s a group of newspapers began to appear that were later called in “alternative press”. They expressed extreme(极端的) political opinions, especially left-wing opinion. Many of the newspapers which were part of this movement, such as the Village Voice in New York or the Reader in Chicago, are less extreme today and more widely read.

4.Law in Britain and the US

In both Britain and the US, when a person is accused of a rime it must be shown that they are guilty “beyond reasonable doubt”. A person is always innocent(无罪) in the eyes of the law until they have been proved to be guilty by a court they can sometimes ask for permission to APPEAL(上诉) to a higher court in the hope that it will change this decision.

Criminal law in England and Wales

When someone is arrested (ARREST) by the police, a MAGISTRATE (=an official who judges cases in some types of courts) decides whether there is enough EVIDENCE(证据) against the person for the case to go to court. If there is enough evidence and the case is a serious one, the person accused(控告) of the crime (called ‘the accused(被告)’) is sent to a CROWN COURT for a TRIAL with a JUDGE and JURY (=12 members of the public who have to decide if the accused is guilty(有罪的), then the judge decides the SENTENCE(判决) (2) (=punishment). If there is enough evidence against the accused but the crime is not a serious one (for example a traffic offence) then the case is heard in a MAGISTRATES COURT.

If found guilty in the Crown Court the accused may apply to(请求) the COURT OF APPEAL (Criminal Division) where he or she will be heard by a judge. Sometimes a HIGH COURT judge from the Queen’s Bench Division assists in dealing with criminal matters in the Court of Appeal or Crown Court.

  Criminal law in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, as in England and Wales, someone accused of a crime may be tried in a Magistrates’ Court or a Crown Court depending on how serious the crime is. Appeals from the Crown Court are heard in the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal.

  Criminal law in Scotland

Scotland has a separate court system. After a person is arrested by the police, an official called the PROCURATOR FISCAL is in charge of deciding whether there is enough evidence against the accused for a trial. If there is enough evidence and the crime is a very serious one, the accused is sent to the HIGH COURT OF JUSTICIARY where there is a judge and jury(陪审团) (in Scotland there are 15 people on a jury). If there is enough evidence but the crime is a less serious one, the case is heard in a SHERIFF COURT (The sheriff is a trained lawyer who acts as a judge). Appeals from the Sheriff Court go to the High Court of Justiciary.

  Criminal law in the US

The US has tow separate court systems. In general terms STATE COURTS are used when someone has done something against the laws of CONSTITUTION of a particular State. FEDERAL COURTS deal with cases to do with the laws and Constitution of the United States as whole. Federal courts also hear cases where the US Government is one of the sides involved(介入). Cases for crimes which are not serious are likely to be heard in state courts. Serious crimes may be tried in wither state courts of federal courts depending on the situation, for example cases where a crime has taken place in another state are often heard in federal courts.

After a person has been arrested a magistrate(地方官员), or in some cases a GRAND JURY made up of between 16 and 23 citizens, decides whether they should go to trial. If there is enough evidence for a trial the accused goes to court and has to state whether he/she is guilty or not guilty of the crime. If they say they are not guilty they are sent to trial with a judge and jury (of 16 or 20 citizens) in either a State or COUNTY COURT or, in federal cases, a DISTRICT COURT. If the accused is found guilty they may have the fight to appeal to a higher court. as shown below.

The final court of appeal in the US federal system and for some cases in the state courts is the US SUPREME COURT. It is made up of a CHIEF JUSTICE and eight ASSOCIATES. The accused does not have the fight to be heard by the Supremes Court, but the Supreme Court decides which cases it will hear.

South Korean scientists say they have engineered four beagles that glow red using cloning techniques that could help develop cures for human diseases.

The four dogs, all named “Ruppy” — a combination of the words “ruby” and “puppy” — look like typical beagles by daylight.

But they glow red under ultraviolet light, and the dogs’ nails and abdomens, which have thin skins, look red even to the naked eye.

Seoul National University professor Lee Byeong-chun, head of the research team, called them the world’s first transgenic dogs carrying fluorescent genes, an achievement that goes beyond just the glowing novelty.

”What’s significant in this work is not the dogs expressing red colors but that we planted genes into them,” Lee told the reporters on Tuesday.

His team identified the dogs as clones of a cell donor through DNA tests and earlier this month introduced the achievement in a paper on the Web site of the journal “Genesis.”

Scientists in the US, Japan and in Europe previously have cloned fluorescent mice and pigs, but this would be the first time dogs with modified genes have been cloned successfully, Lee said.

He said his team took skin cells from a beagle, inserted fluorescent genes into them and put them into eggs before implanted them into the womb of a surrogate mother, a local mixed breed.

Six female beagles were born in December 2007 through a cloning with a gene that produces a red fluorescent protein that make them glow, he said. Two died, but the four others survived.

The glowing dogs show that it is possible to successfully insert genes with a specific trait, which could lead to implanting other, non-fluorescent genes that could help treat specific diseases, Lee said.

The scientist said his team has started to implant human disease-related genes in the course of dog cloning, saying that will help them find new treatments for genetic diseases such as Parkinson’s.

A South Korean scientist who created glowing cats in 2007 based on a similar cloning technique said that Lee’s puppies are genuine clones, saying he had seen them and had read about them in the journal.

”We can appraise this is a step forward” toward finding cures for human diseases, said veterinary professor Kong Il-keun at South Korea’s Gyeongsang National University. “What is important now is on what specific diseases (Lee’s team) will focus on.”

American beer, with very few exceptions, varies from the mediocre(普通的) to the terrible. There are not many types of beer in the US—”light” and “dark” are two terms commonly used.

It is therefore normal to order beer simply by brand name. In a restaurant, in fact, it is quite all right to order “a beer”, and they will tell youwhat they have.

It is not necessary, either, to specify quantity when ordering beer. If it comes in bottles or cans, you will get a bottle or can, and if it’s “on tap”(可以随时取用的) you will get a glass, unless you order a “pitcher”(有嘴和柄的大酒罐 i.e.a jug). The latter is very convenient thing to do, since you can then take the jug and glasses to your table and keep filling up without going back to the bar. (It is harder, however, to know how much you have drunk.)

Some beer comes in bottles with tops that look as if they need an opener, but you can, in fact, screw(拧开) them off by hand—though you have to be very careful not to hurt yourself. It is possible, in some stores and bars,to find a wide selection of beer from all over the world, especially Western Europe and Australia, and it is good fun to experiment with these.

  Cocktails

Cocktails and “mixed drinks” are much more popular and rather stronger in the USA than in Europe, and visitors may not be familiar with some of the terminology(术语). “On the rocks”, as you probably know, means with ice, while “straight up” or “up” means neat and without ice.

There are hundreds of different cocktails, and there is no space here to list all the different names.

  The Hard Stuff

In America “whiskey” means bourbon(一种烈性威士忌酒,最初为美国肯塔基州Bourbon地区所产) unless otherwise indicated. Bourbon is a rather oily spiritmade from maize(玉米). Rye(黑麦威士忌酒) whiskey is called “rye” and Scotch

  whiskey “Scotch”.

  Wine

In bars wine can often be bought by the glass. Don’t be misled by names such as “Chablis” is used to refer to white wine, and “Burgundy” to red—Americans seem never to have heard of white Burgundy.

Ive heard a saying that went something like, if you stay in a country for three weeks you can write a book, three months a postcard, and three years nothing! I am now faced with this problem. Having lived in China for about five years, I am totally used to daily life here. That shouldnt be something to complain about, right? Adapting to a different society and culture is something to be satisfied with, is it not? Usually it would be. However, it makes writing a column about my impressions of China a lot more difficult.

Luckily for me two friends from my country, Ireland, came to visit me during the summer. It was their first time in China and it was through their eyes that I rediscovered the pleasure of experiencing a foreign culture for the first time again.

At first I found their remarks and reactions to the sights of daily Beijing life puzzling. They were fascinated by every little detail. Details that I barely noticed. Why did they want to take a photograph of a man selling you tiao? What was so interesting about a line of waiters standing outside a restaurant? Why was a group of elderly people exercising in the evening so enthralling?

I started to recall that scenes like these once fascinated me too. In Ireland you just dont see them. It was then that memories of my first month in China came flooding back to me. When I first came to this country I worked as an English teacher in Wuhan. Thinking back it was the students I met in that first year and Chinese university life in general that gave me the deepest impression.

In the west, student life is a combination of study and socializing with a heavy emphasis placed on the socializing part! During my first week as an English teacher in China I was invited to a student party. Having only recently graduated from university myself I still very much enjoyed student parties and gladly accepted the invitation.

On the evening of the party I was accompanied to a building on campus by two students. I was led to a room and entered expecting to see people dancing, drinking, eating and chatting. Instead, I found myself facing an auditorium of about two hundred students applauding me. I was handed a microphone and asked to speak. About what? I asked with a fright. Anything came the reply! After I ①got over my initial stage fright I found that it really didnt matter what I talked about. My audience were happy to have the opportunity to listen to a native English speaker. They simply wanted to practice their English.

In the course of the following year I encountered many such situations. I was genuinely impressed by the dedication and motivation of Chinese students. When I was a student I would rarely give up my spare time to any activity connected with study. Unless exams were approaching my weekends were devoted to having fun or perhaps a part-time job. My Chinese students, on the other hand, seemed to spend their entire waking hours studying. I understand that competition in Chinese universities is extremely intense. Nonetheless, their energy and drive put me to shame.

As a foreign teacher I was mainly responsible for helping the students to improve their spoken English skills. To most people that sounds really easy. All you have to do is ②turn up for class and chat with your students. Thats all very well but wh

at if your students are too shy to respond? Most of the students could read and write English very well but getting them to talk was like drawing blood from a stone. They were experts at replying to questions with one-word answers.

Alcohol is the cause of and solution to many of lifes problems! Bearing this in mind I organized several parties and plied my students with booze. Once tipsy, they lost their shyness and the English flowed like water. This slightly unorthodox method effectively ③broke the ice and our speaking classes became a lot noisier. In a classroom noise is good, as long as it is the noise of activity.

It may be true that rote learning is over-emphasized in Chinese education. Nonetheless, I found that this does not reflect the natural character of Chinese students. Given the appropriate classroom atmosphere and a chance to ④warm up the students I met were naturally spontaneous and instinctively enjoyed drama. In some of the role-plays we acted out, certain students became so involved in their parts that they were ⑤bordering on an identity crisis!

My first year in China was also my first year as a teacher. If I said that it was all easy I would be a liar. It was both challenging and rewarding. I hope that my students actually improved their English or at least felt more interested in it by the end of the year. One thing I know for certain is that my year in Wuhan changed me for the better. Thanks to the politeness and warmth of Chinese students I conquered my fear of speaking in public and became more self-confident. Most importantly, I met dozens of fine decent people and made numerous excellent friends.

An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you’re not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. When you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That’s what hospitality is all about: making people feel at home when they’re not.

The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests squirm. Giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety in some cultures-it’s expected. But in American culture, a guest is not obligated to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their host. Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers, candy or-if the family has small children-toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice.

American hospitality begins at home-especially when it involves food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask, “Can I bring anything?” Unless it’s a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will probably respond, “No, just yourself.” For most informal dinners, you should wear comfortable, casual clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or else call to inform your hosts of the delay. During the dinner conversation, it’s customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food!

When you’ve had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you’re the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit-chat, it’s probably time to head for the door. You don’t want to wear out your welcome. And above all, don’t go snooping around the house. It’s more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour. But except for housewarmings, guests often don’t get past the living room.

Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here’s a good rule of thumb for house guests: Short stays are best. As one 19th century French writer put it, “The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest.” Even relatives don’t usually stay for several weeks at a time. While you’re staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may even invite you back!

Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people. Folks in the southern United States, in particular, take pride in entertaining guests. In fact, “southern hospitality” has become legendary. But in all parts of America, people welcome their guests with open arms. So don’t be surprised to find the welcome mat out for you. Just don’t forget to wipe your feet.

The swine flu virus will infect a third of the world’s population if it continues to spread at its current rate, scientists warned today, as three more cases were confirmed in the UK.

In what the journal Science described as the “first quick and dirty analysis” of swine flu, a study by researchers at Imperial College London predicted the virus was likely to cause an epidemic in the northern hemisphere in the autumn.

One of the authors, the epidemiologist and disease modeller Neil Ferguson, who sits on the World Health Organisation’s emergency committee for the outbreak, said the virus had “full pandemic potential”.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said: “It is likely to spread around the world in the next six to nine months, and when it does so, it will affect about one-third of the world’s population.

”To put that into context, normal seasonal flu probably affects around 10% of the world’s population every year, so we are heading for a flu season which is perhaps three times worse than usual – not allowing for whether this virus is more severe than normal seasonal flu viruses.”

The Health Protection Agency announced three more confirmed cases of the virus in the UK, bringing the total to 68. The three patients – two children and one adult from London – all had close contact with previously confirmed cases.

Today’s study estimated the contagiousness of the disease by analysing the number of people travelling to Mexico who became infected, and comparing that with a study of a Mexican village where the disease has spread. The research also examined how the virus was mutating.

It estimated that swine flu had killed between 0.4% and 1.4% of its victims in Mexico. The report’s lead author, Christophe Fraser, said it was too early to predict what the death rate was likely to be outside Mexico. “My hunch is that the death rate will be lower elsewhere – Mexico has underlying issues with respiratory disease,” he said.

The researchers said this H1N1 virus appeared to be about equal in severity to the flu of 1957, and less severe than the deadly 1918 version.

”At the moment the virus is not spreading fast in the northern hemisphere because we are outside the normal flu season, but come the autumn it is likely to cause a really major epidemic,” Ferguson said.

He declined to put an estimate on the number of deaths that may occur. “We have some assessment, but the uncertainty is still quite broad,” he said.

”We can say it is not going to be as catastrophic as the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, it is milder than that. But it is still possible it could be [like] 1957 – where about three to four out of 1,000 people who were infected died and overall about 3 million to 4 million people died that year because of the pandemic worldwide – or it could be even milder than that, like the 1968 pandemic which was barely worse than a normal seasonal flu year.

”I am not predicting three million to four million [deaths]. That was what happened in 1957. The world is a very different place today. There are more people in the world, but there is also a much better healthcare system. We have drugs and vaccines, particularly in developed countries, which should markedly reduce the burdens of the disease.”

Ferguson said the findings of the study confirmed that decisions must be taken swiftly on vaccine production.

”One of the key decisions which has to be made this week by the world community is how much do we switch over current vaccine production for seasonal flu to make a vaccine against this particular virus.”

Today Cuba and Thailand confirmed their first case of the virus. The patient in Cuba is a Mexican student at a medical school.

Fidel Castro accused Mexico of failing to disclose the spread of swine flu until after Barack Obama, the US president, had visited the country on 16 April. In a newspaper column, the former Cuban leader wrote: “Mexican authorities did not inform the world of the presence [of swine flu], while they waited for Obama’s visit.”

At least 61 people have been killed by swine flu around the world, and the WHO has confirmed about 4,800 cases.

  Man proposes, God disposes.

这个说法最早见于14世纪,起初以 “If man proposes evil, God disposes of it.”

  eg:

  A: Bob, how about tomorrow’s driving test?Sure to pass,huh?

B: I don’t know. I’ve done enough, I’d say. Anyway, man proposes, God disposes. I am praying for good luck.

It is a sin to steal a pin.

eg: Honesty is the best policy. Never covet what is not yours, for it is a sin to steal a pin.

If you play with fire, you get burnt.

Fire is a good servant but a bad master.

eg: The abuse of power has sent many people into jail, which shows that playing with fire could get you burnt.

Revenge is a dish that could be eaten cold.

eg: He has done serious wrong to his friends. You just wait and see. They will not let him go scot-free. Revenge is a dish that could be eaten cold.

There is no smoke without fire.

虽然说是“坐得船头稳,不怕浪来颠”(相似的西谚是“Do right and fear no man。”)

eg: “No smoke without fire,” said the detective.

”Smoke signals can be misread,” countered Sloan.

  Every dog has its day.

  (又作All dogs have their days。)

eg: You must not look down upon him. Though poor and gloomy. he could turn out to be outstanding one day. As the saying goes, every dog has its day.

If you lie down with dogs, you will get up with fleas.

e。g。 -Harry! How come you’re back so late? Where’ve you been?

  -Just to a friend’s.

-To a friend’s? Just for a glass of liquor, huh? You’re going to be drowned in liquor, I’d say! If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up to find yourself with millions of fleas!

It is easy to find a stick to beat a dog.

eg: -Did you know that Jeff’s been fired?

  -No. What for?

-Jeff sometimes had ideas different from our boss’s.

-Yeah, but Jeff hasn’t done anything wrong, has he?

-Well, boss is boss。 It is always easy to find a stick to beat a dog.

You can’t teach old dogs new tricks.

eg: Don’t forget Wang is already 80. At his age, you can’t expect him to learn the tap dance. You can’t teach old dogs new tricks, you know.

It is a dog’s life Chris is leading。 这类成语很多,如go to the dogs(每况愈下),dog-eat-dog(狗咬狗的,损人利己的),dog in the manger(占着茅坑不拉屎的人)。

Lightning never strikes the same place twice.

  “闪电从不打同一个地方”,与我们说的“福无双至,祸不单行”恰恰相反,这也是差异的一个有趣的体现。

eg: -How were your exams? All over?

-I really don’t know. I did rather poorly last time. I hope I’ll do better this time.

-Come on, don’t worry about it。 You are sure to pass。 As the saying goes, lightening never strikes the same place twice.

One swallow does not make a summer.

“One swallow does not make a summer”强调的是要区别一般性与特殊性的辩证哲理; 而“一叶知秋”体现的则是从细微的端倪窥见总体趋势的睿智。

eg: -Hey, look! The scores are already 2:1!Liverpool is sure to win, I bet!

-I don’t think so. One swallow does not make a summer. Miracles always happen the last minute.

(Can Swine Flu Be Blamed on Industrial Farming?)

Amidst the hubbub surrounding the current pandemic threat from swine flu, an epidemiological mystery has been unfolding. Authorities have designated Edgar Hernandez, a five-year-old from La Gloria in the Mexican state of Veracruz as “Patient Zero”—at least he is the earliest case they have found so far. Virologists have determined that the mutating flu is a combination of several older flu strains, commonly associated with pigs. And La Gloria is home to nearly a million pigs on a nearby factory farm.

So is so-called swine flu really just another environmental problem associated with factory farming?

After all, such large operations keep the animals in close confinement, dope them with antibiotics to keep them alive in the crowded conditions and create vast pools and piles of waste—all good ways to promote the spread of any disease.

Other health threats, such as antibiotic-resistant strains of staphylococcus aureus, have emerged from pig farms as well.

Nevertheless, this H1N1 strain has not yet been found in the pigs near La Gloria, nor is it clear how it would have jumped from the factory farm to little Edgar.

But what is clear thanks to the hard work of virologists is that this particular strain of flu got its genetic start on U.S. hog farms back in the 1990s. That’s according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. How the virus jumped from pigs to humans may have nothing to do with factory farms, but confined animal feeding operations helped to breed the disease.

In the United States coffee is the usual drink at all hours of the day. American coffee is usually lightly roasted and often served very weak. Italian-style coffees–expresso and cappuccino–are often available, but one has to ask for them. Next after coffee, Americans are likely to drink cola drinks, such as Coke or Pepsi, or other soft drinks. These include root beer (a sweet, gassy, non-alcoholic drink made from herbs), fruit juices, or iced tea (cold tea served with lemon or sugar). Beer–always served ice cold–is the most popular alcoholic drink.

  Ordering Coffee

When you order coffee in an American restaurant, the waiter will often inquire, “Regular?” This means with milk or cream in it. In an American home, your hostess might ask, “With or without?”, meaning with or without milk or cream. The word regular may also mean non-decaffeinated to some people.

  Ordering Beer

In an American bar, people don’t order beer by asking for a pint or half pint as is done in a British pub. When the bartender asks, “What’ll you have?”, Americans ask for a glass of draft beer (“I’ll have a draft”) or a bottle of a specific brand (“I’ll have a bottle of Budweiser”), or say something like, “Two beers, please.”

(I’ll have a draft)或一瓶某个牌子的啤酒(I’ll have a bottle of Budweiser.

  Tip

In America, a restaurant or bar bill is called a check, rather than a bill. So at the end of your meal you would ask, “May I have the check, please?”

May I have the check, please?”

A man in Bristol has captured footage of what he believes to be a UFO flying over Britain.

Andy Hadlington saw the mysterious blob silently hovering around and filmed it from the window of his office.

The mysterious grey object glided around the residential area of Knowle, Bristol, at 5.30pm on Sunday without making a sound.

UFO experts have been clambering to verify the sighting and are hoping to speak to more witnesses and views of the eerie episode.

Computer game writer Andy, 36, said: “It was the freakiest thing I have ever seen in my life. I was sitting in my office and saw it out of the corner of my eye.

”We’re not far from the airport so I thought it could even have been a low-flying plane, so I was quite alarmed.

”It was quite exciting – it sort of hovered past the houses. There was no sound. I ran downstairs and out of the garden to see where it went but I couldn’t see anything.

”My fiancée was out at the time but I’m sure other people must have seen it. It was so clear.”

Denis Plunkett, of the British Flying Saucer Bureau, based in Winterbourne, near Bristol, was unable to comment on the video but said there were ways to verify its authenticity.

Mr Plunkett, 78, said: “There are ways to sort out good from bad. Firstly they are silent, there will be no noise.

”They can also become invisible. They can go in and out of MOD radar. They can change speed, direction and height in seconds.

”The best thing is if there are multiple witnesses to the sighting. If more people saw this I’d be very interested.”

There is no doubt that happiness is the most precious thing in the world. Without it, life will be empty and meaningless. If you wish to know how to get happiness, you must pay attention to the following two points.

First, health is the secret of happiness (the key to happiness). Only a strong man can enjoy the pleasure of life.

Secondly, happiness consists in contentment . A man who is dissatisfied with his present condition is always in distress.

(Stonehenge may have been pilgrimage site for sick)英语作文 发表时间:2010-11-21 20:08:41

In this Monday March 31, 2008 file photo, archaeology students Steve Bush, right, and Sam Ferguson, left, sieve through earth amongst the stones at Stonehenge, England.

Archaeologists probing the secrets of Stonehenge, Britain’s most famous prehistoric monument, said on Monday it may have been an ancient pilgrimage site for the sick who believed its stones had healing qualities.

It has always been a mystery why bluestones, the smaller stones that form part of the circle, were transported around 155 miles from Preseli Hills in Wales to Wiltshire in southern England.

Archaeologists from Bournemouth University, who carried out the dig in April — the first at Stonehenge since 1964 — believe the bluestones were revered as healing stones.

”It was the magical qualities of these stones which … transformed the monument and made it a place of pilgrimage for the sick and injured of the Neolithic world,” a statement from the archaeologist team said.

Geoffrey Wainwright, president of the Society of Antiquaries of London and one of the experts leading the work, told BBC radio that one reason which lead to the conclusion was because a number of the burials around Stonehenge showed signs of trauma and deformity.

The archaeologists said in the statement that radio-carbon dating put the construction of the circle of bluestones at between 2,400 B.C. and 2,200 B.C., a few centuries later than originally thought.

But they found fragments of charcoal dating from before 7,000 B.C., showing humans were active in the area much earlier than previously thought.

During the excavation at the World Heritage Site on Salisbury Plain, the researchers also found a beaker pottery fragment, Roman ceramics and ancient stone hammers.

”We now know, much to our surprise and delight, that Stonehenge was not just a prehistoric monument, it was a Roman and mediaeval monument,” said Wainwright.

Another of the team leaders, Tim Darvill of Bournemouth University, said the bluestones appeared central to the purpose of Stonehenge although it may have had more than one function.

Other theories about Stonehenge are that it was a religious site or that it acted as a calendar.

The stock market jumped 6% last week on growing hopes of an imminent economic recovery. It has risen 39% from the March lows on similar hopes. Of course, it had previously fallen nearly 60% on fears of a slump.

All these moves have one thing in common: Millions of investors have acted on the belief that share values are closely related to what will happen in the economy in the next few months and years. But are they right?

Not according to Ben Inker, director of asset allocation at contrarian fund company Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo & Co. In a recent and fascinating note (’Valuing Equities in an Economic Crisis, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying about the Economy and Love the Stock Market’), Mr. Inker persuasively argues that the next moves in the economy shouldn’t actually matter too much to investors at all.

  Why? Two reasons.

First, because most of the value of shares really depends on the cash they will generate many years, even decades, ahead. The next few years are only a minuscule part of the equation. ’Since stocks do not have an expiration date and dividends grow over time,’ Mr. Inker argues, ’the duration of stocks is extremely long. If we assume that half of the return from stocks in a given year comes from the dividends and half from the growth in dividends, most of the value of stocks comes from cash flows in the distant future.’

How distant? Using Mr. Inker’s hypothesis, it turns out that about 75% of the value of shares is actually based on dividends that will be paid more than eleven years from now. Half the value is based on dividends to be paid after 25 years, and a quarter on those to be paid after about 50 years.

In other words, when you look at the market today, three quarters of its true value is based on what companies will earn and pay out after 2020 and half is based on what they will do after 2034. So really, how much attention should you pay to next quarter’s earnings?

This is counterintuitive to most investors. Mr. Inker does not go into his math in detail, but some simple calculations may illustrate the point. Imagine, in a perfect world of smooth returns, you buy a $100 basket of shares today with a 7% earnings yield. They pay out half these annual earnings in dividends, and reinvest the rest to grow. In the first year you have a $100 investment earning $7 and paying $3.50 in dividends. In year two that’s grown to a $103.50 investment earning $7.25 and paying about $3.62 in dividends. And so it goes over time. After 10 years your investment has grown to $141 and the dividends are $4.94. By year 25 the investment is worth $236, and the dividends are $8.27. If you look out 100 years, your investment is worth a remarkable $3,119 and the dividends are $109, or more than the original purchase price.

You probably won’t hold on till then. (Your grandchildren might not, either.) But the value of that soaring income stream is built into the price we pay when we buy shares today for $100, and sell them 25 years from now for $236. Even after discounting future earnings — a dollar next year is worth slightly less than this year, and so on — these distant earnings form an incredibly large part of today’s value, simply because they are so large.

There is a second reason for not paying too much attention to the economy’s next move. No matter what happens next month or next year, sooner or later the economy will probably find its way back onto its long-term path anyway. If we now boom wildly, we’ll pay for it with weaker growth down the line. And if things are bad for a while, eventually they’ll pick up. That can be true even for devastating blows. GMO’s calculations show that by the late 1940s, Mr. Inker writes, the U.S. economy had returned to the long-term growth path ’as if the Depression had never happened.’ And that was even true by the late 1950s for West Germany after the devastation of the Second World War.

This sort of analysis is a useful antidote to stock market moods.

Wall Street is back on its happy pills again. At some point, maybe even soon, brokers may start urging us to pay too much for stocks on the basis of this year’s economic growth or next. Canny investors may respond: But what about 2034?

Saint Lucia’s Day is a Swedish traditional holiday. On December 13th,one of the shortest, darkest days in the long and cold winter,Sweden celebrates the holiday,in honor of Saint Lucia, the Queen of Lights.

On the day, girls in Sweden dress up as Santa Lucia wearing a white dress and a crown of candles. Boys carry a candle and wear a kind of white pyjama. They wear hats that are pointy with golden stars on them.

In Sweden people do not wear candles anymore because before girls caught their hair on fire very often. Today they use modern candles with batteries in them.

After lunch most schools close on Santa Lucia day around noon. It is a national holiday of Sweden. In big cities in Sweden there are beauty contests where some women dress up as Santa Lucia and the judges and the people vote for the Santa Lucia of the year. There are also special foods for Lucia’s Day like spicy gingerbread biscuits. In schools people sing Santa Lucia’s song.

  As To Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia was a saint because of her kindness and her love. She was an Italian Christian who lived in Sicily in the 4th century. Some people believe she once visited Sweden.

The way she became a saint was that a man loved her but Lucia didn’t like him. Lucia’s mother asked her to marry the man but she refused,so the man said he would burn her.But Lucia prayed to God to have the power to survive the fire. Because of her kindness her wish was granted. The man then got a sword and stuck it into Lucia’s throat.

There is also another story for her being a saint which goes like this.

Saint Lucia was a very kind person and a man loved her very much but she didn’t like him. The thing the man loved most about Saint Lucia was her eyes. Then she gave him her eyes. But a miracle happened, she grew back her eyes and this time they were even more beautiful than ever. The man asked for those eyes but she refused,so the man killed her with a knife into her heart.

  Song for Santa Lucia

The night goes with weighty step round yard and round earth. The sun’s departure leaves the woods brooding. There in our dark house, appears with lighted candles Saint Lucia,Saint Lucia.

The night goes great and mute. Now one hears its wings in every silent room murmuring as if from wings. Look at our threshold. There she stands white-clad with lights in her hair Saint Lucia,Saint Lucia.

The darkness shall soon depart from the earth’s valleys thus she speaks a wonderful word to us.The day shall rise anew from the rosy sky. Saint Lucia,Saint Lucia.

  Happy Saint Lucia’s Day!

Sept. 2, 2008 — Men tend to wind up with life partners who look like their mother, while a woman is lured to a partner who looks like her father, scientists reported on Wednesday.

Heterosexuals are deeply attracted to individuals whose faces are similar to that of their opposite-sex parent, they said, suggesting that this characteristic is rooted in an evolutionary drive.

A team led by Tamas Bereczkei at the University of Pecs in Hungary created a model of facial ratios — width of jaw, distance between mouth and brow and so on — comprising 14 facial zones.

They measured 312 Hungarian adults from 52 different families using this method. Each family included a couple, along with two sets of parents.

The researchers found a significant correlation in facial similarities between a woman’s mate and her father, and also between a man’s partner and his mother.

The team tested the model on faces that were randomly selected from the general population and repeated the experiment with a panel of judges, who also picked out the same pairings from randomly selected groups of photos.

Interestingly, men and women focused on different parts of the face when they home in on a potential mate, they found.

A man’s lover and his mother tended to have similar fullness in the lips, width of mouth, as well as length and width of jaw.

But for women, the critical features were the distance between mouth and brow, the height of the face, distance between the eyes and the size of a man’s nose.

The choices are driven less by psychology and socialization and more by evolutionary pressures, suggests Bereczkei.

Too much genetic overlap — as can happen with incest — is an evolutionary no-no.

But seeking similar genetic traits “may confer individuals with additional adaptive advantages,” he wrote.

It could increase the degree to which parents share genes with offspring, enhancing the genetic representation of future generations.

Finding similar partners might also help perpetuate genetic complexes that have evolved to adapt to a particular environment.

There may be an additional bonus, which probably has more to do with happiness than a genetic imperative.

”Human couples who are similar in physical and psychological characteristics are more likely to remain together than dissimilar partners, possibly leading to an increase in fertility,” the study concludes.

The research appears in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The Royal Society is Britain’s de-facto academy of sciences.

Stock markets around the world shrugged off some of the worst economic data in decades and the bankruptcy filing of a top U.S. auto maker to post their biggest monthly jump in nearly two decades, capping a dramatic seven-week rebound.

Markets built on gains as investors bought into the belief that stocks touched a bottom in early March. Investors fixed on signs that the global economy wasn’t shrinking as quickly as it once was and that the financial system was no longer tottering.

The Dow Jones World Index jumped 12% in dollar terms in April, its largest monthly jump since its inception in 1991.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 17.61 points, or 0.2%, to 8168.12 on Thursday, but ended up 7.4% in April for the best two months since the start of the last bull market in 2002. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, up 9.4% for the month, had its best April since 1938.

’There comes a point where people feel more and more compelled to put money to work, and the fear of missing a recovery grows pretty rapidly,’ says Jonathan Passmore, a portfolio manager at GE Asset Management who helps oversee $7.5 billion in international stocks. At the same time, ‘The higher the market goes, the more challenging it becomes to sustain the recovery.’

U.S. junk bonds, meanwhile, returned a record 9.7% in April through Wednesday, according to Merrill Lynch & Co. data, a sign that investors are willing to take on more risk.

(Research Shows Gratitude Heightens Quality of Life)英语作文

(Research Shows Gratitude Heightens Quality of Life)英语作文 发表时间:2010-11-18 15:43:12

Two psychologists, Michael McCollough of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Robert Emmons of the University of California at Davis, wrote an article about an experiment they conducted on gratitude and its impact on well-being. The study split several hundred people into three different groups and all of the participants were asked to keep daily diaries. The first group kept a diary of the events that occurred during the day without being told specifically to write about either good or bad things; the second group was told to record their unpleasant experiences; and the last group was instructed to make a daily list of things for which they were grateful. The results of the study indicated that daily gratitude exercises resulted in higher reported levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, optimism, and energy. In addition, those in the gratitude group experienced less depression and stress, were more likely to help others, exercised more regularly, and made greater progress toward achieving personal goals.

Dr. Emmons – who has been studying gratitude for almost ten years and is considered by many to be the world’s leading authority on gratitude – is author of the book, “Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier”. The information in this book is based on research involving thousands of people conducted by a number of different researchers around the world. One of the things these studies show is that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels by around 25%. This is significant, among other things, because just as there’s a certain weight that feels natural to your body and which your body strives to maintain, your basic level of happiness is set at a predetermined point. If something bad happens to you during the day, your happiness can drop momentarily, but then it returns to its natural set-point. Likewise, if something positive happens to you, your level of happiness rises, and then it returns once again to your “happiness set-point”. A practice of gratitude raises your “happiness set-point” so you can remain at a higher level of happiness regardless of outside circumstances.

In addition, Dr. Emmons’ research shows that those who practice gratitude tend to be more creative, bounce back more quickly from adversity, have a stronger immune system, and have stronger social relationships than those who don’t practice gratitude. He further points out that “To say we feel grateful is not to say that everything in our lives is necessarily great. It just means we are aware of our blessings.”
